After reading Still Alice, I decided to check out some other books by Lisa Genova, as I really enjoyed the book. This book grabbed my attention because of the subject matter.
Anthony is a young boy with autism. He does not communicate verbally with his family, and he struggles with social interactions. As a result, his parents must learn new ways to function as a family. They also remain hopeful that they will find some doctor or some medication that will "unlock" their son. Anthony's mother, Olivia, is one of the narrators of this story. She is grieving her son's autism and asking questions like "why my son"? Having a child with autism has put a strain on her marriage, and as a result, she and her husband have separated. Concurrently, Beth is a mother of three girls who just received a card in the mail informing her that her husband has been cheating on her. After confronting her husband, he admits to being unfaithful, and she asks him to leave. For the first time in 14 years, she is on her own. Throughout the story, she is able to rediscover the person she was before began to identify herself solely as a wife and a mother.
Both Beth and Olivia live in Nantucket, and island in the Northeast. Their lives eventually intersect, thanks to Anthony. Even though this young boy is unable to communicate, he teaches both women invaluable lessons about communication, love, living life, and the enjoyment of simple pleasures.
